What Neighbors Should Know About the Proposed Cape Fear Environmental Site

Our Goal

Clear, factual information about a proposed solid waste facility in Brunswick County

The proposed Cape Fear Environmental Site will be a modern municipal solid waste landfill located on a 735-acre site south of Mt. Misery Road. The facility would accept household trash and construction debris. No hazardous waste would be accepted.

This website was created to help neighbors understand what is being proposed, how the review process works, and how to stay informed.

Next Step

Reviews begin with the Town of Navassa.

Why Here?

Brunswick County is growing, and existing landfills are nearing capacity.

The proposed site is already zoned for heavy industrial use, provides direct access to major transportation corridors, and is large enough to allow for extensive buffers and environmental protections. These factors allow the facility to be designed and operated in compliance with strict state and federal requirements.

Modern Landfills May Surprise You

When many people picture landfills, they think of facilities that were built decades ago.

Across North Carolina, schools, homes, businesses, parks, and community facilities exist near modern landfills. In many cases, former landfills have been converted into parks and recreational areas.

Landfills as Neighbors

Environmental Protections

Modern landfills are highly regulated facilities designed to protect surrounding communities and the environment. Key environmental protections include:
  • Protective liner systems designed to prevent waste or liquids from reaching surrounding soil or groundwater
  • Waste is limited to small working areas and covered each day
  • Buffers, berms, and vegetation limit visibility, noise, and odor
  • Odor, litter, and pest controls are required as part of normal operations
  • Ongoing monitoring of groundwater and air quality
  • Regulatory oversight and inspections by the NC Department of Environmental Quality and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

Community Benefits

If approved, the project is expected to generate more than $1 million annually in host fee payments to the Town of Navassa, along with additional property tax revenue.

These funds could support infrastructure improvements, public safety, parks, and other community priorities identified by local elected officials.
